Japan's spot indium trade lackluster on missing buying interest

Singapore (Platts)--7Oct2008

The spot trade for indium imported into Japan remained lackluster this
week on the extreme lack of buying interest, market sources said Tuesday.

Despite the return of Chinese producers and traders from a week long
holiday break, sources lamented that no deals were heard done this week.

"The market is very quiet," one Japanese trader said, summarizing the
same sentiment for all other industry sources.

Another Japanese trader said many Japanese buyers were delaying their
purchases as their stockpiles remained high.

"Buyers are not that keen to buy now as they have bought quite a bit when
prices were low. Suppliers are also not very aggressive," one Japanese trader
said.

A Chinese trader, who had sold at $535/kg CIF Hong Kong prior to the one
week holiday break in China, said limited raw material had kept prices steady.

A Taiwanese source concurred that it was pointless for Chinese
suppliers to lower prices as production costs has remained high and most of
the Japanese consumers' stocks could last them until the end of the year.

Platts assessment for grade 99.99% indium ingot remained at $480-540/kg
CIF Japan this week, unchanged from the previous week.
