I know people who have been fired this week. I know people who are losing their homes and everything else they have in life. I know people who owe a lot more on their mortgage than their house is worth. I know that many, many people are looking at their stock portfolios as they shrivel and wonder if they should have bailed months ago and bought gold coins. This is not merely the stock market throwing a party for the short sellers -- this is an economy that is freezing up and throwing people out the window. This is a market with fear -- but not merely irrational fear. It is a market where people know that next year is likely to be worse for them personally and they are scared to death of what that might mean. There is no more complacency, although it was there in spades just a few months ago. Forced selling, fear selling, opportunistic selling -- call it what you will -- there is limited appetite to buy and lots of incentive to run and hide. Watch gold -- the system of central banks and international currencies is hanging by a thread.
