Obama takes huge lead in Wednesday's Gallup Poll

By Yael T. Abouhalkah, Kansas City Star Editorial Page columnist

On Wednesday, Barack Obama surged to his biggest lead yet in the Gallup Poll, 52-41 percent over John McCain. And that gap could grow even larger in the next few days.

That's when Americans will make it clear they think Obama won Tuesday's debate with McCain.

Obama has been at or above the magical 50 percent victory margin the past five days.

Why? Because people recognize McCain has no answer on the nation's economic problems -- and McCain has been in Washington all these years as the crisis approached.

Sure, I grant you some of your points. But here's where I differ with the Catholic Priests who raised me. They taught us that Catholicism was the true path to God passed down to us from Jesus to Peter and then in a long line of Popes. I don't buy it. I'm using the brain God gave me to voice a different opinion based on a lifetime of experience. There are many paths to God, whether you are Catholic, Baptist, or Jew. Each believes in God and each has it's rituals and quirks. But don't tell me that if you aren't Catholic, that you are going to Hell. That's ridiculous.

Again, I say that ideology is a failure of imagination. God is infinitely smarter than all of us and if we were to know the truth, we'd find that the multi-verse is infinitely more bizarre than we could ever imagine and much of what we hold true in our man-made religions are only a glimpse into the magnificence that is God. For example, he doesn't care whether you eat pork or not. That was probably something old Jewish men made up because back then pigs were thought to spread disease because they like to wallow in mud. But somehow Jews have come to believe that if you eat pork you go to hell.

We need to use our brains a little bit more and stop taking dogma and ideology at face value, because face value is just that, not worth the paper it's printed on.
