Several, I imagine.

Not sure how sorry I would feel for this guy though.

My experience is that the local GM dealers are always among the wealthiest guys in town, having been able to peddle their cars to the locals in a protected market for, as your friend has, generations.

GM needed to encourage their local stores to upgrade as the competition was eating them up.

The local could agree to continue the partnership, and continue to enjoy what they thought would be the never-ending gravy train or bail on the franchise.

They made a bad decision, and in real capitalism, they would need to suffer the consequences, regardless of which candidates they had been funding over the years.
