I find it cheap and weak behavior and I have no respect for those who engage in it. First of all, I posted that column without comment because Smiley is a respected journalist and author. It was her POV, however extreme, that was interesting to me, and I thought would be to Syb since we have discussed her novels. I saw no reason to express my personal feelings about it. So without even asking what I thought of it, you chose to believe that I agreed with it, and even went so far as to discuss it elsewhere, condemning me. Your sensibilities were SHOCKED. Personally, I don't agree with Smiley's POV, not that you really asked, but I also think she may have been trying to make a point, one with which those who lived the 60s and the VN War can more readily identify than those who came after. There WAS a feeling of what conservatives love to label "moral equivalence" between the protestors and those who ran that war. VietNam was an immoral war for many, and the rise of protests, followed by reactions from the govt such as the one at Kent State, set the stage for a segment of the population to become violent. Those emotions were aggravated by the horrors that emerged and the enormous number of dead. I will never condone violence, ever, but unless you lived those years, as so many have said here, you just can't quite understand the way our society stretched and fractured. It's that same extremist segment, incidentally, that concerns me as Palin continues her irresponsible incitements in her appearances with no apparent compunction about possibly causing violence, or any effort to correct the ugliness when it shows itself. We have seen it before. I also think Smiley may have been showing the absurdity of what is being attempted by the desperate McCain campaign in linking extremism to Obama by way of Ayers.
