>>This might be because McCain, of himself, raises fewer hackles (or revolts fewer opponents) than Bush in 2004. I can't imagine Kerry rousing genuinely strong feelings either way.<<

TS -

Au contraire. For the people who bought into the Swiftboat Vets stories, Kerry became an object of virulent hatred.

Certainly there was more hostility toward George Bush in 2004, as he had been throwing his weight around and screwing up pretty much everything he touched for three years by then. That's my view of it, anyway.

Thames, re: "Actually this still seems to be less intense, certainly less vitriolic, than the 2004 election."

I think one reason for that could be that the black and white thinkers who were so ready to declare as traitors and "hate Americans" those of us who disagreed on Bush/Cheney and Iraq, are now a little chagrined.

The world has more shades of gray in it than they imagined and apparently reality slapped some of them mute for a while.

Even the David Brooks of the world stopped carrying water for the ideologues.

But they'll be back. Ed

This might be because McCain, of himself, raises fewer hackles (or revolts fewer opponents) than Bush in 2004.

I take your point, but perhaps it seems worse to me because I expected better from McCain. And perhaps because the charges are more conspicuously bogus and tasteless. With the swiftboating, there was really no way to know what really happened. It was not inconceivable that the accusations were legit. Also, it seemed to come more from third parties than this year, where the candidates are actively participating. "I approved this message."
