the far lefties were once considered centrists. I heard some righties call Sandra Day Oconnor a leftie, and she was a centrist appointed by Reagan!

Thanks for the analysis. It isn't as grim as I thought. And I agree with you that our definitions of left and right are bit off. On most political spectrum charts, B. Clinton and J. Kerry are just right of center.

A while back someone here posted electoral maps for each presidential election going all the way back to 1968. I was quite surprised when I looked at each of the maps. The 90s and this decade are probably the bluest this country has ever been. Some of the electoral maps from the 1970s and 1980s were solid red......not one blue state. I thought it had been the other way around.....that the country had gone from liberal to conservative, but in reality, it seems its going the other way. Of course, maybe the reason more Dems are getting elected is because as you pointed out.....they have drifted right over the years. ;-)
