Nothing is manufactured. It's driven by the options market
that lacks liquidity. Expirations in this situation can be
very dangerous, and at VIX = 75 previous rules don't apply.
I would argue that a market crash, normally impossible,
now has a pretty high probability of occurring. We will
certainly see a lot of government action next week to
prevent that outcome, but it may be late, as options values
increased 10-30-fold.
