Nortelmeets forecasts, growth seen slowing Reuters Story - October 21, 1997 14:07 %ELC %SP500 %CA %RESF %HOT %CORA NTL.TO V%REUTER P%RTR TORONTO, Oct 21 (Reuters) - Northern Telecom Ltd provided few surprises on Tuesday in posting a healthy third-quarter profit, but analysts said that growth at Canada's largest telecommunications equipment maker may be slowing. Nortel earnings climbed 37 percent to US$153 million or US$0.59 a share in the quarter from year earlier US$112 million or US$0.43 a share, meeting analysts' expectations. "The results today weren't a home run...there were some points of weakness that I think are concerning," said Michael Urlocker, technology analyst at Gordon Capital Corp.

The selloff today occurred because:

1) Earnings didn't surprise

2) Growth cannot be sustained at this level

3) They didn't announce a stock split as many had hoped

4) The stock has run a long way this last quarter

5) Alot of short term traders piled into the stock yesterday hoping for a quick buck (such as me - ouch!)

Any others?

The stock could run down to $132/$95 Cdn./U.S. before settling.
