Read up on Truman and Pendergast, GZ. Pendergast ran politics in Kansas City and St. Louis. Nobody won without the Pendergast support...From the first moments of Harry's political career (above judge), he was associated with Tom Pendergast. To his credit, he went to Pendergast's funeral when everyone told him he shouldn't. He understood what Pendergast was, but he absolutely was fully associated with him for his years as judge and Senator.

My point is that virtually every president can be found to have people who helped them on the way up who they might like to not be associated with later.
