I think it could work for a short period. Of course at expiration they'll still have to deliver, so that's still the day of reckoning. Almost be worth buying a contract right before expiration and accept delivery just to stick it to someone.

Of course, if COMEX actually did implode it would cause gold to skyrocket, since the short selling of futures would be crippled overnight.
