Our wonderful idol Uncle Al KBE didn't fail. He succeeded. The US$ has retained most of its value and in fact is still about equal value to what it was as measured by gold over quarter of a century ago.

Compared with the Dow, the US$ is about equal value to a decade ago. Compared with yen, the US$ is about where it was about 15 years ago. Compared with NZ$ it's in keeping with the last 20 years.

All that has happened is that hordes of wild-eyed speculators have lost their shirts and are looking for somebody to blame other than themselves. It's true that many didn't think they were speculators, but when they were borrowing 100%, or even more, to buy a house, they were woefully ignorant if they weren't speculating.
