Political support for many people, is more like rooting for a sports team than it is a serious consideration of the political issues. To be fair, this doesn't just apply to the left/Democrats.

Also to be fair, on an individual level this makes some sense as "rational ignorance". Since the odds that your vote will determine the election, very closely approaches zero, and since the effort needed to understand the majority of current issues enough to have an informed opinion is not light, it makes sense for many who don't have a particular interest to remain ignorant.

The problem is that while they remain rationally ignorant, they then irrational vote based on the ignorance. If you really don't have a clue than I think you shouldn't vote. I'm not saying that they should be forbidden from voting, just that the clueless should choose not to vote.

All the "rock the vote", or even "vote or die" campaigns, trying to get everyone to vote, aren't very sensible in my opinion.

Well maybe they are sensible from a partisan perspective. If one side or the other (probably the Democrats) thinks they can mobilize more of the people who support "their team" then they would have reason to want to mobilize those voters even if they are clueless.
