I don't doubt that they are. It still doesn't explain the radical nature of the plan.

Which is my point. If this is the pragmatic solution, it has got to be a really big mess.

It's worse than that. We sold them crap mortgage backed securities. Then we sold them worthless credit default swaps to "insure" them against loss ON the mortgage backed securities. All based on the reputation of financial genius of our mighty investment banks.
