Romney as the head of the ticket wouldn't have been in a statistical tie with Obama just before the two conventions. And IMO, it was a personality thing more than religion or anything else. Before Huckster came along, Romney was doing fine with most of the religious right. Yeah, a few on the fringes are suspicious of Mormons, but that was a minority, I think.

As for Palin and the religious right, the 'base' that she was supposed to attract, are these the same people on mic at townhalls saying Obama scares them because he's an Ay-raab?

OK, fine - they're not all as stupid as that woman. But really, who else are they going to vote for if not McCain? Picking Palin only played to people who were never going to vote against McCain anyway. At worst, a few would stay home, but most would be just as worried about an Obama presidency as they are now and turn out to vote for McCain, and he'd be getting a whole lot more swing voters now without her than with her. Yeah, he got a post-convention bounce out of picking her and for a while I even bought into it as a just-crazy-enough-it-might-work move, but she's nothing but a drag on the ticket now. I'd be happy if they could find some way to trade her in.
