An analogy on credit default swaps and your chart. The red area are like sick people with life insurance. A lot of them won't make it, but, that's why they bought the insurance. The green area is like healthy people with insurance - some of them won't make it either, but the sick people have already demonstrated that their insurance is worthless.

Oh, the amount of financial assets secrued by these credit default swaps is over $500 trillion.
