Cost effectiveness may not matter in terms of the ultimate optimal goal. Breaking the bank could serve purposes you do not anticipate, or, things might happen that you do not anticipate (and that I do not anticipate) which make what you think is the non-optimal route, the optimal route. You're in the box Karen- you can guess that your cost based system is the "right" one, or "more" optimal, but you'll never know for sure, and you certainly can't prove it.

Aned I disagree with you about that "need to belong". The research makes it look like it's a lot like being gay. You are born with wiring that makes it much more likely for you to be conservative or liberal. You could try to fight the wiring to fit in, but I suspect most people do not or cannot- so people probably find groups that fit their wiring, rather than changing who they are to fit in. That's why liberal families produce conservatives, and conservatives produce liberals- it's probably some sort of genetic scatter function that breeds to the norm like intelligence.

I'm sure it's being studied to death, and we'll know the answer some day. I'm a pretty good guesser when it comes to genetics and population models- so be forewarned :-)
