Oaks do grow very fast. I love oaks. They are beautiful and extremely useful. Wonderful wood. Wonderful trees.

You are right about the canopy keeping light off the ground. Forests intercept almost all of the direct sunlight.

They combine that sunlight with water and nutrients from the ground to produce wood and foliage. The amount of energy they store is pretty unbelievable.
