I think it would be more accurate to say that he has libertarian tendencies (though libertarian has slightly different nuances in the US than the UK).
I wholeheartedly agree with his views on the paramount importance of keeping politics secular - though not his contempt for religion.

He's a strange bird. Off the scale bright, but sometimes erratic in judgement.

He is above all a brilliant polemicist.

koan, re: Hitchens, Yes he was a liberal while writing for "The Nation" up until a point. From my take, he jumped on the Clinton impeachment bandwagon. I stopped reading "The Nation" 3 years ago, but like Katha Pollit (spelling).
