First came chests or coffers = boxes to put your stuff in

Then came the linen press in the 17th and 18th century = chest on legs with shelves inside to put your stuff on.

Then in the 19th century came the wardrobe to hang your clothes in.

In America, the Shakers invented the built-in wardrobe, aka a closet.
