I had to drag my folks kicking and screaming into it

There were two things that helped with my father. The key was when I told him he'd never get another medical bill. He perked right up when he heard that and committed to it, not fully understanding, I suspect.

The other thing that helped, totally by chance, was Animal Rescue on Animal Planet. When I moved in with him, I took time out for my regular animal welfare show every day. He didn't pay much attention, or so it seemed, but what he absorbed from having it on in the background was that the animals understood that the people were trying to help them and they submitted. Somehow he applied that to his situation and submitted to the influx of helpers with a really good attitude. Serendipity, that was.

I guess it's different for everyone. We caretakers just have to find the key. Sometimes that involves dragging.
