"Not separate from" means not separate from... at various early stages there is literally only one organism. That's totally false. From conception you have a new organism. What the moral status of that organism is, what the legal status should be, etc. are the questions that get debated, but there is no way you have just one organism. becomes more and more 'seperate' if you will... with greateer and greater chance of survival. Greater chance of survival, and "a separate individual",or to avoid the different meanings of separate, a "distinct individual" are two entirely separate concepts.
