"There's a lot more going on here than the Pacific NW."

Having lived in S. Cal., but being familiar with the rest of America, I can tell you that, other than the great weather and beaches, CA has nothing going for it the rest of America doesn't have, and a LOT going against it. America is so homogenized now, it all looks alike.

Ted, > Then why did you move to the OC?

There's a lot more going on here than the Pacific NW.

Maybe so, but you have to drive to see it.

I know what you are talking about, though. Portland's light rail is a great example of mass transit spurring on urban development. But as of now, the light rail still can only serve a small minority of Portland's working residents.

Actually, they've opened up a new line and expanded another since you left. I think light rail services quite a few people now. Plus, they have put in streetcars in the inner city. Seattle's first light rail line opens next year.

Mass transit here in Southern California, of course, is horrendous. I've never racked up so many miles on my car and burned so much gas trying to do mundane things like go out to my favorite restaurants or go shopping at the hip malls. It's so spread out here, despite what it seems like with the traffic. I'm going to get to 200K miles on my car before I know it.

Between you and I.....its one of the big reasons why I left. I began to hate driving. I would rather pay other people to drive. And its not because of the driving per se but the huge traffic jams that force you to stop and go for miles and miles. Driving from LA to the OC would cause my right leg to cramp up.
