A lot of rumors are being circulated about voting. If in doubt check with your local registrar's office.

There is a rumor being floated in Virginia that "absentee ballots are not counted in the general election in Virginia" unless the election is close---that is false!

Absentee ballots are counted.

1. In Virginia, there is "In person absentee voting" based upon a written application with a valid reason such as surgery on election day, being out of the country, working at a poll as an election official and more-----"In person absentee voting" is applied for and done at approved election locations .

2. There is also absentee voting by mail based upon an Absentee Ballot Application with valid reason----with the ballot returned by a given day prior to the official election day.

3. There is one important nuance that anyone filing the Virginia Absentee Ballot Application should be aware of----there is a line on the absentee ballot that could be misinterpreted by an Absentee Voter:

That is Line 7A on the first page of the application:

a. If you check the box for line 7A, you will not get the full ballot, you get only the Presidential ballot, not the ballot for Congressional offices.

b. If you want to vote for both President and Congress the box should not be checked to assure that you get the full ballot for Presidential and Congressional.

A Registrar's office in Northern Virginia indicated that the "Absentee ballots not counting is a vicious rumor that has gotten started" -------they are getting lots of calls on this.

She indicated there may be some states that count absentee ballots only if a race is considered close-----she could not vouch for which states if any-------hence best to check with your state on policy.

If that is the case, then Nationally this Presidential election could be rather messy if some states do not count absentees and some do.

It is conceivable that a state with heavy absentee voting could find the absentee ballots deciding the popular vote and the electoral vote for a state.
