John McCain picked up the endorsement today of the newspaper that helped save his presidential bid in January.

The New Hampshire Union Leader, which ran a series of front-page editorials before the Granite State primary praising McCain and slamming rival Mitt Romney, said that in these uncertain times, "America needs an experienced, decisive leader with clear vision and a steady hand to guide us through. That man is Sen. John McCain."

"The troubles that will face the next President of the United States are numerous and perilous. They will test the character, the resolve and the mettle of the man we choose to deal with them. Of the two men who stand on the precipice of that great office, only John McCain has proved that he has what it takes to make the tough decisions in a time of crisis," the endorsement continued.

"Barack Obama's call for "change" has a certain appeal, to be sure. But this is no time to be rolling the dice on an untested leader whose rhetoric doesn't match his record when it comes to delivering actual change. John McCain has a long history of standing up to Washington's permanent political class, regardless of party, and pushing for institutional reforms to end business as usual. He is the right leader to restore trust in our government, confidence to our markets and prosperity to our country. On Nov. 4, do right by your country and vote for John McCain for President."

McCain won the New Hampshire primary, and is counting on winning the state's four electoral votes on Nov. 4 in what looks like an increasingly narrow path to the White House.

Well, that is true to a certain extent. The independents are up for grabs and they are leaning towards Obama two to one. Also, folks like me switched to vote Democrat. I don't think there are a lot of us, but given that folks like Buckley switched as well, I have to believe I'm not the only Republican switching to vote for Obama.

I know I care a great deal about the deficits and national debt. It is the number one reason I started getting pissed off with the Republican Party in the early 2000's. But here's what I know. The Dems believe in PayGo rules and have promised to get back to that. The Reps abandoned those PayGo rules when they took majorities in both houses from 2001-6. So given that history, I want to give the Dems a chance to make good on their promise to abide by the PayGo rules that brought us surpluses in the late 90's. McCain has made no such promise.

The real question is whether either candidate will abandon all the other big spending promises they've made in favor of PayGo. Tough choices for sure await the next President.
