1) Only if your phone did not go for a swim in the ocean or toilet or you did not drop your phone from a building.

2) Only if the phone is functioning

3) One main reasons why people are replacing cell phones like crazy is that the consumer is assuming that they are getting the phones for free and they forget about paying for it with their monthly service. This is the main reason why phone sales have been so strong.

I would add:
4) People can't afford a BIG shiny new gadget, so they settle for a SMALL shiny new gadget.

I'm in this camp, I go nuts if I go too long w/o a new "toy," no matter how small.

This accounts for a portion of the replacement market but there are hundreds of millions of fully functioning handsets sitting in drawers because people decided to replace them before they died. I know I have a few and I would guess most on the thread do as well.

That's true in the US, where contracts are king but much of the rest of the world relies on prepaid and actually pay for their handsets. Also, even in the US people may decide to get the free handset rather than the $199 iPhone or the $129 Instinct. It all adds up to lower numbers.
