Is there ANY OTHER group who has immigrated to various Christian countries that can't adhere to the court system? I can't think of one. Muslims need to accept the court system of whatever country they immigrate to, OR GO HOME. Assimilate or go back to Saudi Arabia.

I thought it was not uncommon for new immigrant groups to this country to have their own internal court system. For an example, the Italian mafia had its own method of executing justice. When immigration to the US was its highest at the turn of the 20th century, assimilation into the dominant culture didn't happen in a few years......it took at least one generation for the new groups to assimilate and they had more in common with the existing groups than Muslims do now. And I don't think it will be the Muslim parents who assimilate into the dominant American culture but their children.

Like many americans I thought the french were exhibiting some underlying racism when I heard about the riots a few years ago. Now, I know what this is really about and I actually feel for the french.

But it was racism.....at least in part. With the notable exception of Marseilles, most Algerian Muslims are forced to live in the poor suburbs of the cities, particularly the poor ones around Paris. Its very difficult for them to get a job in part because of the difficult labor laws in France but also because an employer is more likely to hire a Frenchman than an Algerian. I also understand it is very difficult for Algerians to get an apartment even in the middle income neighborhoods of Paris. Discrimination is quite rampant. It was only two years ago that the French passed a law prohibiting Muslim women from wearing a scarf over their heads when in public buildings. My God, at one time women wearing a hat was a fashion statement in the US.....it still is in upper class Brit. circles. And yet, the French will not allow Muslim women to wear a scarf over their heads. Why? That seems very discriminatory to me.

[BTW in case you didn't know, Algeria is considered a part of Metropolitan France and I believe all Algerians are considered citizens of France whether they live in France or in Algeria.]

On the other hand, Algerians are in a similar position to the Mexicans in this country..........they don't live far from their home country so its very likely they are less motivated to assimilate and I can understand how frustrating that must be to French. And yes, some of the more conservative Muslims have cultural habits we/the French find unacceptable. Plus, much of the violence against Jews in France comes from Algerian Muslims. Having said all that, I still believe that racism plays a significant role in race relations in France.

I would be curious to hear what Nigel and Thames-sider think about the Muslims in the UK.
