>>> Because the Soviet Union realized what it really meant.

If MAD was working, the missiles would never have been in Cuba to begin with.

According to Robt. McNamara in the excellent documentary, "The Fog of War", Castro was TELLING Russia to hit America with the nukes that were already on the island, even though it would have meant absolute destruction of Cuba.

Castro was willing to give it ALL up for Russia to have nuked America. So, just how well did MAD work? We were extremely lucky.

This is precisely why Reagan believed MAD was a totally insane policy, and why he established (before taking office) that it made moral sense to defend ourselves from attack RATHER than to avenge an attack after the fact.

Had Reagan not intervened and brought MAD to an end, there is no telling what the world would look like today. Absolutely no telling.

CJ, > Because the Soviet Union realized what it really meant.

All by themselves, huh?

At least you acknowledge that MAD meant getting the missiles OUT of Cuba. It's hard to justify allowing Iran to get their hands on nukes simply by trusting that they respect MAD. But I guess I'll have to trust that even Obama wouldn't want that, either.
