Implying guilt from association would typically be wrong (unless the form of association was something that would be a guilty act itself). Implying major guilt from minor association even more so.

Which doesn't mean that association should always be totally ignored. It can speak to the judgment of the person depending on the nature of, closeness of, and number of such associations, and who they are with, but at most (except perhaps in the most extreme circumstances), its a rather thin argument, shouldn't imply actual guilt, and is less important than the actions of the person in question.

I think we can at least agree that often far too much is made of associations.
