>>Will someone please tell me why dredging up people to register to vote is a "good thing" to do, particularly on the public dime?<<

Karen -

I know that ACORN does a number of things, and receives government money for doing some of them. I tried to find a source to confirm that they receive such money for registering voters, but I couldn't find it.

A lot of people seem to think that getting more people to participate in the democratic process is a good thing. Throughout history, there have been voter registration drives undertaken by all kinds of groups, some of them partisan and some not.

I'm not sure where to come down on this issue. If most of the people who vote are ignorant fools, it doesn't seem useful to have them vote. But there is no mechanism for determining who is a fool and who isn't, so we have to let everyone vote.

If people don't have the will to vote on their own, I agree that it is of questionable value to goad them into registering. On the other hand, some people may just need a little encouragement.
