Karen -

I'm going to come down on your side on the question of whether we can learn something from people who disagree with us.

I think we can usually learn something from anyone.

But here's a concrete example of how I've learned something on this thread that I wouldn't have learned if BearCatBob hadn't been around. I've learned that proposals to build dozens of new nuclear power plants in the next few years sound like a good idea, on many levels, but are unworkable.

If I hadn't had to debate BCB about this subject, I never would have looked up the information I needed to realize that 1) there is a shortage of containment vessels for nuke plants, which is delaying construction projects that are already underway, and that 2) the costs of building nuke plants has been increasing rapidly.

I wonder if Obama knows that? He could have responded to McCain's statement that he wanted to build 48 new nuclear plants in the next ten years, by saying that it would not only be prohibitively expensive to do so, but it's probably not possible on a practical level.

I've learned a lot from participating on this thread, both from people who agree and from those who disagree.

- Allen

I do not find it an appropriate expenditure of my time when my time is limited. The wheat to chaff ratio for me is prohibitive.
