Saying that Israel can defend itself totally misses the point.

If we didn't learn anything else from WWII, it is that when you have a state that is gearing up for a fight and you sit on the sidelines, you invite trouble.

Israel's position is the most indefensible in the world. They sit on the edge of a huge region, one in which practically every state is aligned against them.

They occupy a bit of land which is so small, literally, that fighter planes or missiles from any of several hostile nations, can be not only in their airspace but bombing the shit out of key targets within minutes. The piece of ground Israel sits on is impossible to defend from a strategic standpoint for that reason if no other. And to have one or more hostile nations threatening them routinely is totally untenable as a long-term security position.

While Israel may have the weaponry, it is an exceptionally difficult location to defend.

As a result, it is crucial that the United States -- if it is to be an ally to Israel -- use its power to try and PREVENT any attack in the first place. The best way to do that is to unhesitatingly and loudly proclaim our support for them.

While Obama has said he would support Israel, he is not proclaiming it in a way that would serve to discourage an attack from a country that, for example, has openly talked about destroying them. He comes across as weak and unsure of himself, and that is not lost on the leaders of these rogue nations who would love to see Israel wiped out.

>Do you agree with Obama, or do you hope he's just saying that to look strong in foreign policy against McCain?

I disagree with him, but I think it's what he believes (unfortunately).
