I don't think our effect on the rest of the world has anything to do with it. We just heard thamessider talking here about Philadelphia MS, Brown v Board of Ed, states rights - nothing to do with the world as a whole there .... I just clicked on his name and see he's talking about Joe the plumber and our taxes now.

Actually I was agreeably surprised when Obama basically told Joe that he would be paying more, for that reason...

What the hell? Why is a Brit worrying about how much taxes an American plumber should pay? No, thats strange.

I myself have at times had some interest in the politics of the UK (although apparently not as much as thames_sider has in American politics)

Interest is one thing. Being a wannabe is another.

I'll confess I also have no interest in the politics of Luxembourg... Belgium, now, Belgium's a different matter <g>

And if you ever get the chance to live abroad, take it. it's worth it for many reasons, not necessarily just financial ones. OK, I might well turn down Angola, or Zimbabwe, or indeed Afghanistan, right now... but anywhere you're likely to be posted or are offered a job, if it's somewhere that you think might be even just tolerable, try it.
