Sure he doesn't make $250k, or own a business that makes that much, and right now he apparently isn't in a position to own any such business, the point isn't "next year Joe will get slammed with taxes", the point is a general one about small businesses. Joe would like to, and at some point might be able to, own such a business, but even if he never does raise enough capital and otherwise prepare himself for the business, we shouldn't lose the issue through looking to the current circumstances of one specific individual.
