What happens in the US is ... very important so I'd understand a strong interest in foreign policy, but taxes and other domestic stuff? A clear party preference? Discussions of who is the worst President?

This dominance may not be noticeable to you, but I assure you it is overseas.

Not disputing the existence of a phenomenom, just its healthiness.

for example I discussed US politics with our next-but-one neighbours, who were from Houston
Lots of Brits (and everything else) here in the Houston area. Our next-door neighbor until a couple yrs ago was from England. And then my company does business in the No Sea (offices in Aberdeen & Stavanger & in the greater London (on the M25) area - wont say the town name as its kinda small and that would tend to indicate my employer).
