Without Palin, McCain had a chance to go squarely to the center and shake off Bush. He also had the chance to raise his own campaign money and ignore the Bush machine and, thereby, also shaking off Bush.

The right wing idiot base is already worked up over a, OMG, a guy who isn't an old white guy headed for the WH. They would have voted anyway.

With Palin, McCain loses all credibility with the more educated Republican. Heck David Brooks calls her a cancer and then get tons of hate mail but he tells the truth.

Palin makes the GOP look like a bunch of racist, knuckle-dragging, ill-kempt, uneducated dolts. That is not a good image to have at any time much less during an economic crisis.
