An important difference is the fact that we have a huge population, and Norway doesn't. There are about five million people in Norway, benefitting from billions and billions of kroner worth of oil.

Norway is #2 worldwide in GDP per capita. Or #3, depending on how you calculate GDP. The US is either #4 or #11. In actual dollars, our GDP per capita is about half of theirs.
