I think the McCain people started out thinking the Wooten/Monegan situation was just a "small potatoes" issue they could blow off. But they didn't understand the political dynamics here in Alaska, and got sucked into an escalating battle to sweep the issue under the rug until after the election. The claim that Branchflower's report vindicates Palin is indeed a brazen tactic, but it sort of works because people are focused on other issues.
