With the exception of those four years during WWII, I don't think any of the Scandinavian countries has ever been invaded, conquered, or occupied by any other nation.

This is about the only point on which I disagree with anything in your post... just from memory:
Denmark had intermittently been at war with Germany and its southern territories (Schweslig-Holstein or similar) were disputed up until WWII. To the north, it ruled most of southern Sweden and Norway since a nominally united kingdom from the Middle Ages. Then IIRC Norway was 'given' to Sweden in 1815 by the Congress of Vienna, because Sweden fought on the right side (i.e. against Napoleon) during the Napoleonic wars, and presumably Denmark didn't...
Norway only got its independence last century from Sweden (which used to have a quite substantial Baltic empire including parts of modern Germany, Poland, Russia and the present Baltic states).
Finland was effectively under Russian rule until 1919, I think from the late 1700's, and I believe was Swedish-run before that. I don't recall if it was ever independent before 1919.

By comparison the last century's been pretty peaceful <w>

Might be some Fins that would take exception to this comment. I believe Finland has been occupied (maybe ruled would be a better word?) by Russia off and on for just about ever. In the Winter War with Russia in 39, Finland lost much of their territory to Russia never to be regained. So interestingly if you count 1939, Finland fought on both sides of the war! Their whole effort though was to save their country which was smack dab between Germany and Russia. Absolutely fascinating reading this part of Finlands history.
