JF, I think your post is a likely story that fits the facts.

I would add, though, that when it comes to organizations that help the poor and minorities, they often get a pass on issues like fraud and incompetence. People equate "cleaning up its act" with a threat on its very existence. Hence, it MUST be a "conspiracy" by the white man to disenfranchise voters.

Bottom line is that ACORN should indeed clean up its act. Their reputation is rightly tarnished, and since they are doing something honorable, they have that obligation to the people they serve, not to mention the guy they're most likely going to vote for anyway: Barack Obama.

Of course, the New York Times seems more interested in defending Obama than getting ACORN to clean up its own act. Obama too has chosen the safe political route, which is to distance himself somewhat from ACORN and attack the GOP for making such "vicious" attacks.
