Yes, nominal numbers can be quite different from inflation-adjusted numbers.

According to the CPI, a Dollar in 1974 was worth only 51 cents in 1982.

This is hardly surprising since 1974 to 1982 was the period of time which bookmarked the last bubble in oil prices.
