Karen -

Tim's quite moderate statement about bias in the media surprised me a bit, though on reflection, it shouldn't have.

The only important question about media bias is, to me, whether or not it has an effect on public opinion.

There is a wide variety of information outlets available in the modern world, and among them there is a wide range of lesser or greater bias, in both directions.

I would say that the more biased media outlets do not so much shape public opinion anymore, but rather they tend to harden it, and to push it toward the extremes. I think that a lot of people, maybe most people, find their news in places where their personal views aren't challenged.

I don't think most people want a lot of complexity or nuance thrown at them. It's easier to deal with black or white.
