Once British Empire went belly up -end of WWI- the baton was not formally handed over to the US, this was the root cause of the Depression and lead to WWII.

Today we are in the same situation. Only it took longer than the interim period 1918-1939.

It's been taking 1972-2008 to unfold into a crisis that will not be solved by war but by a round of discussions the type US and Europe are agreeing upon.
