Having worked with the Secret Service a few times, it's amazing what they can do when they decide to seal off an area completely and make it almost impossible for anyone with a weapon or a bomb to get physically close to their protectee. I suspect Obama's next two weeks will be limited to carefully controlled rallies and no spontaneous walks down the street to drop in on the breakfast crowd at a diner.

Since the SS is likely protecting their next president, I would expect maximum precautions to be in place. Clearly that wasn't the case with King and Bobby Kennedy, or even when Reagan was shot by a bystander on the sidewalk just feet away from him.

No one will get near Obama without having been swept and closely watched by the SS guys. So I am not too worried on that account.

It will be amazing to see a black man sworn in as president. I still remember watching Mandela's inauguration on TV and marveling at how far South Africa had come in just a few short years since I first went there, and the whole apartheid state was still in place in 1988.

My students are all convinced he will be killed

That's sad, isn't it? Blacks have good reason to be somewhat cynical and fatalistic. An Obama victory would be magical, I think, for the black community.
