That's an excellent point, Sam. Bush expanded government's role in domestic security and prescription drugs first, and now hugely in the financial system. That plus the clear need for disaster relief actions means that no successful candidate can walk away from government and advocate tearing it down.

Because the voters are always going to be there saying, OK, did government do its job for me, to protect me, to keep my bank account safe, to get me medical care when I desperately need it, or get me off my roof in a flood?

It will be a long while before the pendulum swings the other way again (with the next Reagan, who will inevitably come along).
