I don't understand how or why Reid or Pelosi both occupy the positions they do.

Nor do I. It seems that not only does the RW dislike them, but many Dems. No one I personally know likes them. Is there a chance to get rid of them this time around? Do they elect a new one every time they have elections?

Who would be a good replacement for Pelosi?

The Senate ML is basically the maestro who decides what the orchestra will play, the tempo, and keeps everyone in line and on the same page as much as possible. It would be a great role for Hillary since there should be a very active and important legislative agenda next spring.

Reid and Pelosi seem to have reached their positions through time and attrition, waiting out those above them and outmaneuvering their peers in terms of tenure. But they have to be re-elected by their caucus each Congress. Reid doesn't seem to have huge support; Pelosi, OTOH, seems to be more powerful as Speaker. They rarely step down unless they lose their seat or succumb to scandal.
