His ratings went up when he started to rant, and I guess he figured that if a little ranting made his ratings go up a little, a lot of ranting would make them go up even more. I think he is now the most watched cable news person, and seems to get a lot of encouragement from his mail (although maybe he only reads the favorable ones on-air, I don't know). I confess I used to like him a few years ago, but he has overreached badly in the last couple of years. The immigration thing sent him over the deep end.
