Modern hybrid engines and electric cars are the direct result of the US hybrid research done in the 70's. Google Victor Woulk. This includes stuff like regenerative braking, drivetrains, the decendents of which were found in the first prius.

In the 80's, we stopped funding this research while the Japanese continued to work and perfect hybrids. So it goes when a country's leaders lack vision. Now, as you say, GM and Ford both are buying the technology from the Japanese. Tax breaks for SUV's anybody?

Yes, however, back in the 80's and 90's GM development their own technology. They did very well. Due to pressure from big oil they ended scraping all their electric cars.
