Powell is right on the nose with regard to McCain's haphazard way of dealing with the economy. That much more than anything else is what I think tanked McCain's campaign in the last month or two, even more than Palin's gaffes.

I think more important than her gaffes.....its the way McCain decided to pick her with little vetting. Her limited knowledge and inability to speak cohorently when not following a teleprompter most likely would have ruled out her selection. However, McCain decided to do away with the interviewing process and picked her based on what he felt in his gut and other bodily organs. That reflects very, very badly on his judgement.
