UPDATED ENDORSEMENTS: Major Papers in Philadelphia, Tampa and Dallas Back McCain

By Editors and Publishers Staff

October 18, 2008

John McCain got the support of the Tampa Tribune and the Dallas Morning News.

DALLAS

The Dallas Morning News, in addition, called McCain a "progressive conservative" and said the times were too dangerous to hand over to a Democratic president and Congress.

TAMPA TRIBUNE

The direction of the nation is at stake in this election.

Hard economic times, and the seductive promises of a master orator are pushing America toward a European-style liberal state with their chronic social problems.

If you don't want that to happen, vote for Republican Sen. John McCain....

Senator McCain's call to freedom and responsibility might be viewed as less exciting, but you know it works.

The Tribune encourages voters to vote what they believe, not what they wish were true. The nation needs a stable leader in these unpredictable times.

For president, the Tribune endorses Sen. John McCain.

PHILADELPHIA

Philadelphia Inquirer editorial board endorses McCain. Other staff members endorse Obama - it's one of the rare times a newspaper is split on it's endorsement and reflects the political division in the city's population.
